I've wanted to do a pic themed around Pumpkin Hill for a long time now. >> I know a lot of people tend to complain that the 3D games lack the "trippy" designs of the past, but I think a lot the recent theme and design work gets overlooked in general; the quirky gets dismissed along with the more realistic. I mean, c'mon; rickety fences, a teetering church steeple, a flying ghost train, the jack-o-lantern mountains with varied facial expressions against a vivid sunset... what's mundane about that? XD
I did originally plan to incorporate a lot more of the level elements (like the aforementioned train) but eventually I decided that "keep it simple, stupid" can make for an effective mindset. I didn't do much heavy shading on Knuckles himself in an attempt to keep that sort of muted, twilit-sunset feel. It's part of the Pumpkin Hill atmosphere, I figure.
Of course, you now have the song stuck in your head.
Does this bring back memories or what. I love how you did his climbing pose and the BG is well drawn.

Yes. Yes I do. CURSE YOUUUU *FISTSHAKE* In any case VERY nice job! I love the details of the background @_@ Those mountains! Great sense of depth with the blurring there, and I love that sky, it looks very much like a painting. I also like that you kept Knux's shading simple. It helps him stand out more I think. Great work!
I really like the levels, I think they're still quirky haha.
In any case, I really really love this! It's so painterly, the background is AMAZING. I love how you've put a lot of detail into it and left Knuckles still quite cartoon-ish ya know? It really adds a lot to the picture.
Knuckles' music from that game was probably the best in the whole franchise and Pumpkin Hill happens to be my favorite of those tracks, so I don't mind it stuck in my head at all.
I'm with you in finding some of the 3-D games, the Adventure ones in particular, still true to the spirit of the original games despite obvious differences and that people get caught up in nostalgia or "tradition" way too much at times, so I think you made a good attempt at conveying that sense of continuity: it's simple, yet still captures what the level is all about fairly well.

That's actually one of my favorite stages in SA2. It's got a very awesome design and it's fun to play in especially in 2-player mode. Gotta love Halloween.
Anyways. Good job on the coloring and the background, and I really like Knuckles' expression.
